Prince Blaise of Powys is captured by his family's enemy, King Aethelbald of Mercia. King Aethelbald intends to use him as a hostage, however, when his daughter, Ricole learns she is forced to wed, she helps Prince Blaise escape, in exchange for him taking her to her sister's. Instead, she is taken to Powys, and bartered as a hostage herself. However, for Blaise, the prospect of losing Ricole when she is ransomed becomes increasingly difficult to bear, particularly as others in his household, including his father, develop a fondness for her.

Keeping Ricole isn't as easy as just telling her to stay, as vows and promises must be honored. In the end, it is careful planning, along with the assistance of an ancient power that enables Ricole and Blaise to find their hearts' desire.

I enjoyed this story, with the weaving of legend throughout. I found the growing love, not only between Ricole and Blaise, but that of the family around them to be very touching. Truly, the romance is all the more sweet intermingled with the power of friendship and family. Cornelia Amiri does a wonderful job of illustrating the relationships between people and how they grow together.
