It's been a tough year for Claire Jenson. Her beloved husband of twenty-seven years died of a heart attack. Shortly thereafter, her nineteen-year-old daughter, True, moved from their small town of Lansberry to Chicago. Her world is turned upside down yet again when she receives a phone call telling her that True has been murdered.
Who would want to kill quiet, sweet True? That's what Detective Marty Slade wants to find out. True moved to Chicago after being hired as a graphic designer. She didn't have a boyfriend or many friends, and led a solitary life. Claire can't sit back when the police begin to hit a dead end with the case. The turning point is when Claire discovers that True had been frequenting chat rooms on the computer, and that she was terrified of some of the men she had met that way. Will Claire and Marty be able to work together to discover the killer's identity?
Murder Online is an exciting, suspense-filled mystery. It's a definite page-turner, one you will not want to put down until the culprit is safely behind bars. The subject matter is timely, and should encourage a fair amount of fear in those who don't consider the possible evils of the Internet. Claire is a typical mother--fiercely wanting to find her daughter's killer. As with most crime novels, she takes some very unnecessary risks that people "in real life" would not take. And the lack of concern by the local police in her hometown is laughable and not very believable.
Those shortcomings aside, Murder Online is a thrill-filled, intense read that will keep you guessing about the killer's identity. There are many plausible suspects presented, and things don't become clear until the end when the pieces all fit together. The plot is original and moves quickly. Unique characters and well written dialogue round out the story. I highly recommend Murder Online for an exciting read, sure to please even the most seasoned mystery lover.
