Abiding Darkness may be John Aubrey Anderson's debut novel, but don't let that scare you off. The chilling story is similar to something best selling authors Frank Peretti or Ted Dekker might publish, true, but Anderson clearly, and thankfully, has his very own writing style that will set him apart as an equal peer to the Christian literary trendsetters.
Set in the south, where black folks don't interact much with white folks we find more than racial tension building along the banks of a flowing river. Here we find a plot of good v. evil, demons v. angels. Here we find an almost modern rendition of Job.
Seven-year-old Missy Parker is the central character in this epic tale. As a quick-witted, rambunctious child, she, her brother, Bobby, and their best friend, Junior, enjoy avoiding the heat playing in the river's cool water. What no one realizes is that Missy is the target of demonic supernatural forces set on destroying her innocence.
When the otherwise safe haven of the river banks become a deadly nest filled with dangerous demons, Junior steps up to the challenge following his father's advice, and does everything he can as a follower of Christ to protect both Missy and her brother. His courageous, selfless actions set into motion an unexpected course of events. Determined to persevere in her newfound love for the Lord, Missy will reestablish Junior's dream of evangelism and work to share the gospel with the world, despite the devil's planned attacks to shatter her faith.
Great detail, intense scenes, and wonderful characters make this book a genuine page-turner. Anderson's carefully plotted story takes many unexpected and emotional twists. He knows how to create suspense and invoke emotion in the reader. I look forward to the other books to come in his, The Black and White Chronicles.
