She'd known something was amiss the moment she stepped on the porch. It was as if she could sense evil's presence. Kirby also knew her best friend and Helen wasn't the one it was after. She didn't know how she knew; she just knew.

As a child, Kirby had been bounced through several foster homes and knew one thing: "Trust no one, except Helen". Inseparable, she and Helen had been together for a long time and both were gifted magically; but that's where the similarities ended. Unlike Helen who embraced life, Kirby ran from it, pretending to live and letting her fears of the unknown and death rule.

Now to survive the evil stalking her she must not only embrace her abilities and confront her past, but put her trust in Doyle, a man she's just met. A man who is more than he appears.

A part of a series, but standing extremely well on its own, Circle of Death grabs readers from the start. Its tight, fast-paced writing refuses to let the reader go, holding them spellbound until the last page as been read. Ms. Arthur has a rare gift of being able to make a story move quickly, but at the same time immerse the reader in details, descriptions and emotions so they really feel as if they are part of the story. Of all the characters in the book, main and secondary, it was Helen who drew me the most. She was a dominating presence despite her few appearances and those appearances strengthened and added to Kirby's personality.

As the storyline progresses, Kirby becomes more self-confidant and assure. Her struggle to trust Doyle is heart-wrenching and completely understandable. From the moment they meet, the reader knows Kirby and Doyle are meant to be together and questions and agonizes if Kirby will recognize this so they can have a happy ending.

Circle of Death will be going straight to my keeper shelf where I know it will enjoy many, many rereads. As for the author, Keri Arthur, she has become an auto-buy for me and I look forward to collecting her backlist.
