When Robin Vaughan saw her best friend's new horse, Noel, she thought she was seeing a ghost from Christmas Past. Robin was certain that horse was dead; at least it was when she was accused of killing it. So what's it doing munching hay in Lola's barn?

Author Carolyn Banks gives readers a treat for the holidays that even sweeter than a sugar cube. Featuring her trademark wit and a mystery with the perfect amount of death and danger, these pages fly faster than a thoroughbred at the races. Robin Vaughan is a character that deserves a big hug for her devotion to her friends, both the two-legged and the four-legged kind. But she could also use a good reality check now and then. When she decides that something is afoot with Lola's magnificent Christmas present, Robin sets out to prove that Noel is really Wickie, a horse that died while under her care. Complicating this scenario is the enormous price tag on this equine, and the fact that this horse had apparently killed his previous owner. As Robin trots determinedly to the truth, the bad guys try to trip her. What's a gal to do? Both Robin and readers will be breathless at the finish line of this book, both from the suspense and the hilarity of the situations in which she ends up.

While the mystery is definitely engaging to the mind, the author taps into an emotional element as well. Robin is an extremely likable woman, the kind you would love to have as a next-door neighbor. Although she can unravel mysteries with the skill of Sherlock Holmes, her bumbling-stumbling way of uncovering the truth gives her a delightful vulnerability. She's a few pounds overweight, can't cook, but has a fierce loyalty to her husband and friends. Carolyn Banks has an uncontested winner with this character.

I'm betting that A Horse to Die For will liven up everyone's Christmas holiday!
