Evelyn James is summoned to a crime of a young woman wearing cement shoes. It sounds like something out of a bad mobster story, but it's all too real in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. What she doesn't count on is that the mayor wants her to keep him abreast of what's happening, especially when his daughter shows up as victim number two. Can the trace evidence specialist keep her job, find out whodunit with the police's help, and not be pulled in as a victim as each strange twist and turn envelops her in the case?

Elizabeth Becka knows her stuff. Being a forensic specialist, she brings realism into this story of murder and mayhem. Though it does have a couple of moments where the pace lags, there is a steady forward motion from page one. The clues build upon each other and the twists help you see evidence in a whole new light. No more of the CSI "it's done in an hour" rigmarole. This is science and murder in a very realistic way that keeps you in your seat, turning the pages, wondering what will happen next. This is a great outing for a debut author and I'm hoping the next Evelyn James book proves to be just as interesting and well written.
