Wings of Change offers readers a story that gracefully glides through the life of the author, highlighting significant events in her life with a conversational charm.
When Titia Bozuwa and her husband, Gijs, arrived in America in 1957, under the provisions of the Eisenhower Special Immigration Quota, her life was a blank slate, awaiting her adventures in this new world. Parting from her family and roots in Holland was difficult, as were the challenges she faced in her adopted country. These pages systematically trace her steps from the time she embarks as a newlywed, to the moment when she is free to choose her permanent home.
Full of details chronicling the stages of her adjustment to America, this book is almost like a slideshow, depicting the many and memorable moments of the author's life. There is a strong emotional appeal within these pages, as the writer's innocence and exuberance is captured simply and sincerely. Events such as childbirth, finding a home and career decisions all flow together to paint a larger picture. Titia's observations and insights into the American lifestyle and human nature are refreshing and thought-provoking.
As the pages turn, the author and her family become like friends and each trial and triumph evokes sympathy or happiness from the reader. The photos scattered throughout the text are a wonderful addition, and made me feel as if I was sitting alongside Titia as we companionably browsed through her scrapbook. The love she has for her family is sweet, and her determination is an encouragement to everyone.
Wings of Change is about "flying into the unknown" with an author who becomes a friend.
