Sanctuary skillfully examines the path of peace in world gone mad. Compelling dialogue and a purpose-driven plot move the story along with a genuine sense of realism. The historical aspects were well researched and provide strong motivation for the characters' actions. Readers will be emotionally swept up in this tale as the tragic injustice of this time period separates family and friends with irrational hatred.
Rachel Levin was Jewish woman pretending to be a Christian. Pierre Dupre was a French Huguenot at a time when Protestants were being persecuted by their countrymen. A set of tragic circumstances brings this young couple together and causes them to flee from their homeland. Every turn of the page brings new problems and dangers, causing their faith to be strengthened in spite of overwhelming fears.
The author creatively captures this era (or perhaps error is better!) of history, as religious persecutors seek to gain power with the blood of believers. Rachel's innocence and hope for her upcoming marriage is shattered by an act of brutality, which leaves her alone in the world. Pierre has also experienced a great loss, and it is his accurate appraisal of this situation that encourages him to take Rachel on a run for their lives. Their immediate enemy is a French captain, as ruthless as he is heartless. Yet, his determination to hurt Rachel overrides all his sensibilities thereby making him a formidable foe.
As Rachel and Pierre's flight takes them across the country, they meet friends, other believers and even traitors. Ultimately, they reach a place where they need to encounter the oppression that threatens them before moving forward in a faith of freedom.
As part of a new series, Sanctuary holds a promise of more historically and spiritually relevant novels.
