Letters to a Young Evangelical is delivered with Tony Campolo's classic style of warmth, wit and wisdom. These pages offer piercing insights into the belief system of modern Evangelicals, which will trigger some radical thinking among readers. However, at no time is the author dogmatic, rather, he explores sensitive and controversial issues clearly and calmly.
The book is arranged as a series of letters to imaginary young Evangelicals, Timothy and Junia. Seeking to emulate the epistles of the Apostle Paul, Tony Campolo writes to inform, instruct and exhort these new believers in the basic principles of the Evangelical mindset. Like the apostle, the author examines contemporary topics and provides heartfelt and honest teaching.
A variety of subjects are covered, many of which have polarized the Christian camps. In a determined effect to define the boundaries of the Religious Right and "Red Letter Christians", the author presents facts firmly surrounded by a vibrant faith. The result is an often-astounding dialogue of these issues. Readers will be challenged to rethink their convictions about homosexuality, dispensationalism and the foundation of fundamentalism. Although some may disagree with Campolo's conclusions, the atmosphere remains non-threatening, which allows for a fair exchange of ideas. The format of letter writing provides a personal touch to these pages, while the message is delivered simply and sincerely.
Tony Campolo is to be applauded for stepping to the forefront of these debates and offering reasonable responses. Although his opinions sometimes stray from the traditional, conservative ones, this only serves to encourage the reader to formulate decisions based on the love and laws of God.
