Jessica MacKendall had it all: a loving husband, a beautiful son, a good relationship with her stepdaughter, and a great career. Living a high-profile life in Los Angeles with her actor/director husband Cory "Mac" MacKendall was a bit stressful, but there was no doubt Jessica and Mac were in love. In one horrifying moment, her life was turned upside down.
After a call from his pregnant sister Charlene, Mac flew his plane to Minneapolis to bring her to Los Angeles until after her baby was born. For some unknown reason moments after take-off his plane went down, killing Mac and sending Charlene to the hospital in a coma. Between burying her husband, losing touch with both her son and step-daughter, trying to gain custody of Charlene's baby, and bringing Mac's pet movie project back into production, Jessica turns to the one person she and Mac had always counted on, Dane Pierce.
Years ago Dane Pierce had made the biggest mistake of his life: he won Jessica's heart and her love then let her get away. Then she married Mac and he lost his chance forever. Now Mac is dead and Jessica needs him in her life. Dane knows deep in his heart he'll always love Jessica, but refuses to let his true feelings become known, even after Jessica is ready to move forward with her life. Will he ever be able to reveal his love without feeling like he has betrayed Mac and a promise given long ago?
Beautifully written, A Hero's Promise is one of those novels that stay with you long after you finish. The characters are so vibrant and dimensional; they ingrain themselves in your heart and refuse to let go. I found myself alternately rooting and yelling at Dane for being an idiot. I "wanted" to see Jessica and Dane get together. Often in sequels, it's hard to find characters from a previous novel whose chemistry just leaves you breathless... not in this case.
As much as I enjoyed A Hero's Promise, I felt I was missing something in the first few chapters. Jessica and Dane have this wonderful history together and while Ms. Carter hints at IT, not having read the previous novel, Starcrossed Hearts, I had a hard time falling for the characters. Once I did however, the novel came alive for me. I'm now going to purchase Starcrossed Hearts and then reread A Hero's Promise. I highly recommend you don't miss A Hero's Promise.
