From the moment of reading the "true" story of the Phantom of the Opera through the two essays that end this book, I was drawn into a deep, dark, yet highly erotic world that Suzy Charnas brings to life. I enjoy reading all things paranormal, but this book delves deep into the emotions of the characters. Though at moments I found myself having trouble getting into Unicorn Tapestry, once I got past the first few pages, I settled down into a wonderful rhythm and read.
I think the story I could most relate to was Boobs. Though it deals with a teenager, it's the one I could really relate to as I remembered going through puberty. We all want to be strong even as the differences between boys and girls become more apparent and seeing how one girl copes with her loss of physical strength as she enters puberty was interesting and a bit dark. Yet, I could relate easily.
Each story is deep, slightly dark, and on some level, it hits where we think our darkest thoughts, though most of us never act upon them. Suzy Charnas has tapped the deepest part of our lives and brought them out in these short stories and essays. What a wonderful collection that I recommend to anyone who wants something different.
