On her way to pick up her son from a friend's house, Goldie Schulz drives past HMO executive Suz Craig's home. Spotting a large boulder out of place in the perfectly manicured and landscaped lawn, she decides to check things out. The site that greets her sends Goldie into shock. Hidden behind the boulder, lying in the ditch is the body of Suz Craig. She immediately calls her husband to let him know.
Ordered to wait at the scene, Goldie is shocked to see her ex-husband John Richard Korman pull into the deceased's driveway bearing flowers. When questioned by the police, John Richard states that he and Suz "mixed it up", his way of saying he beat her, but she was alive when he left. Taken to jail for resisting arrest and pending murder charges, Goldie's ex-husband blames her for the trouble he finds himself in.
With one of her clients celebrating John Richard's arrest, an upcoming job for a group of enthusiastic Babsie doll collectors, Goldie is perfectly willing to let John Richard sit in jail. However, she is very aware of her son's feelings on the situation. Finally giving into her son's pleas that she help his father, Goldie is once again on the case. But will she unravel the controversy surrounding Suz Craig before the killer gets to her?
Another great mystery from the talented Diane Mott Davidson. Goldie is still solving crimes and whipping up delicious recipes and bringing more delight to her fans. I've enjoyed all of Ms. Davidson's novels and The Grilling Season is no exception. These characters are enchanting and relatable, something I look for in a mystery novel. Not to be missed!

The day has finally arrived for caterer Goldie Bear and detective Tom Schulz to be married. Between getting dressed, fending off well-wishers, and worrying about the food preparations, she has her hands full. Then a single telephone call changes everything. Tom, her soon-to-be-husband, had gone to pick up the minister. Instead he finds him dead.
The wedding put on hold, Goldie tries to focus. Who could have killed the priest? Why would someone kill him? Matters go from bad to worse when the police arrive at the crime scene. Tom is missing apparently the victim of a kidnapping. The only clue to Tom's whereabouts is a cryptic note.
Goldie is worried sick, but she refuses to give up hope. She will find Tom; they will be married. But first she has to discover a motive and track down a killer/kidnapper.
Definitely the most suspenseful and emotional of the Goldie Bear novels, The Last Suppers will have the reader on the edge of their seat. One can feel the character's pain, and the vivid descriptions have the readers searching for coats. Ms. Davidson's ability continues to amaze. Of course, the recipes aren't anything to sneeze at.
Reviewer Note: I highly recommend the MONSTER CINNAMON ROLLS recipe included in the book. They are absolutely superb.
