The small town of Comfort, Idaho is home to the Flannigan family: Big Red, Rose, Scott, Matt, and P.J. But since Big Red is a traveling salesman, Scott, twelve and the oldest of the boys, feels it is his duty to take care of his mother and younger brothers. The boys live normal lives, their main concerns being getting out of yard work for their kindly neighbor Mrs. Bee and summer vacation at the end of the week.

When the boys overhear Mr. Grimes from the bank threatening foreclosure on Mrs. Bee's house, they decide to help her in any way they can. She is convinced that her son Hector, who no one has seen for several years, will know what to do. Mrs. Bee, embarrassed that the bank claims she has not paid her mortgage, makes the boys promise not to tell anyone about her financial troubles and puts them on the trail of one of Hector's old friends who lives in the wilderness, Brimford. The boys soon find there is more to the story than meets the eye.

Is Mr. Grimes lying about the missing mortgage payments? Will Scott and his brothers ever find Hector or his reclusive friend? Will they save the day? Will their mother make them go to bed without dessert?

This adventure story is perfect for reluctant pre- and early teen readers. Ms. Drury combines the right amount of action and mystery to keep anyone reading. If you are looking for a book for your child, this is a quick read to jump start their appetite for books.
