Widower Gerrit Appeldorn was a dairy farmer in Van Dalen, Washington, when he met widow Joan Horton, who was filling in for his granddaughter's piano teacher. He knew instantly she was a special lady, and soon fell completely head over work boots for her and they decide to marry.

Joan is given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to teach at the prestigious Gaylord School of Music in Chicago, which Gerrit urges her to take since he knows she really wants to do it. The move to Chicago ends up being quite a challenge for the country boy and puts a strain on their relationship. As Joan flourishes in the big-city lifestyle, Gerrit struggles to fit in and yearns for home. Will Gerrit and Joan find a way they can compromise or will their love crumble under the strain?

THE RECITAL is the sequel to THE DUET and while being able to stand well alone, is better understood after having read the first book when Gerrit and Joan meet and fall in love. Polar opposites in their lifestyles have this couple making some difficult choices and sacrifices. Differences in their religious beliefs have them in scripture quoting battles and some somewhat heated discussions. You can take the boy out of the country, but can you find a way to get him to fit into big-city life? You'll have to read THE RECITAL to find out.
