"Kit" Kittredge is a young girl in 1934, a time in history when America was suffering through the Great Depression. She is visiting her Aunt Millie, a schoolteacher in Lonesome Hollow, Kentucky. When Professor Lucy Vanderpool arrives from Chicago to study the basket-weaving traditions of the Appalachian people, Kit is excited to be invited along as her research assistant. A mystery then ensues when someone tampers with the professor's photographs and notebooks. Who could be sabotaging the professor's work-and why?
MIDNIGHT IN LONESOME HOLLOW is just one of many mysteries in the American Girl mystery collection for young girls ages 9 and up. Kathleen Ernst herself has authored several of them, along with three of the American Girl History Mystery series books. Ms. Ernst has won several awards and nominations for her writing. The historical details in this book have been well researched and smoothly woven into the storyline. American Girl fans will enjoy reading of Kit's adventures in this book, which is somewhat longer than the usual short stories they may have begun with. Young girls will enjoy solving the mystery with Kit, who is a little girl they can easily see themselves being friends with. Interesting historical photos and information are included at the end of the book for further knowledge and discussion on the Great Depression and Appalachia, Kentucky.
