Mystery and fantasy. Two genres that always stretch the reader's imagination. "The Magisters Mask" blends the two in a captivating tale of intrigue and magic.

In the city of Chalsett, crimes are investigated by Magisters who have been trained in the strongest kind of magic to help them find the guilty. Shenza Waik of Tresmeer has spent years training, and has now become a Master. Her teacher, Laraquies Catteel of Nelnoor, has decided that she will investigate the next crime that befalls the city.

Word is sent to teacher and pupil that the first lord has been murdered. Despite arguments from the city guard, Shenza takes on the case. As she follows the clues, she finds herself getting entwined with local politics and pressure by the local guard to convict an innocent man. Regardless of the pressure, Shenza stays on course to find the truth. That is if the people responsible for the first lord's death don't kill her first.

This tale created by Ms. Fredericks is a refreshing change of pace for the mystery lover. This is a basic "who-dunnit" with the added intrigue of a world where most anyone can wield magic. The "mask" in the title refers to a mask that the magister wears to help them "see" things. Things like detecting left-over magic and ways to know when magic is being used.

The author creates a beautiful world that is woven together with a tapestry of political intrigue and complex characters that make the story full and compelling. It has as many twists and turns as a Sherlock Holmes mystery. This is not a boring book, and is a great read!
