The next installment with Wren and Sergei is action and growth for both characters. Wren has taken it hard with the death of her friend, but things haven't stopped in the magical community. In fact, people have gone missing and for the first time in a long time, Wren has taken on a case without Sergei's help. What Wren doesn't realize at first is that there's more to this Retrieval than meets the eye.
The nonhuman population of Manhattan is getting fed up, the Lonejacks are upset with people going missing, and the Council itself is unaware of what's fully going on behind the scenes. It's up to Wren to protect her home, even when it seems she's a target of the Council. Can she do the retrieval, help the magical community band together, and deal with what looms ahead in the form of KimAnn Howe, a leader of her city's Mage Council?
Laura Anne Gilman has outdone herself with this latest episode in the Retriever universe. Wren, Sergei, and even my beloved P.B. is back and they're all learning and getting deeper into what's happening with the Cosas, the world, and with each other. The revelations are moving, the action is fantastic, and the ending is something that makes you wonder what will happen next. Ms. Gilman has created a universe I enjoy and am always anticipating the next book. Though you don't need to read the series in order, it does help with understanding some of the events spoken about throughout the book.
