Lily Manchester had built her business from the ground up. Married at nineteen, then abandoned by her husband when he joined the army, she had started her own florist shop. Now it was a thriving business and she loved every minute she spent working, even when business became really busy, like during the calla lily season.
Excited about receiving the first shipment of calla lilies, Lily was waiting outside when the delivery van arrived. To her surprise, there was a new driver. Alex James told Lily the other driver had fractured his ankle and he would be running the route until he was better. That was okay with Lily. After all, Alex was a good worker and very easy on the eyes. As she studied him, she couldn't help but wonder what the townspeople would think if she were to date someone as young as Alex.
Lily is taken aback when Alex asks if there could ever be anything between them. What was he thinking? He was only twenty-five, while she was a mature thirty-seven. Yet, she can't deny there is something between them. Alex makes a deal with her: he'll give her seven days to come to a decision and if at the end of that time she says they haven't a chance, he won't do anything but remain professional.
As hard as she tries, Lily can't get Alex out of her thoughts, but neither can she stop the thoughts of what people will say. Will she allow the townspeople's preconceived notions to take away her chance at happiness? Or will she take a chance on a blooming love?
Bloom by Linda Dominique Grosvenor is a magnificent tale. Told in the first person, we're given an intimate look into Lily's life. We completely understand where she's coming from and desperately want her to be happy. Viewing Alex through Lily's eyes made the romance come alive in ways I didn't expect. I became very aware of vocal tones, facial expressions and tiny gestures; he didn't remain a flat two-dimensional character. Ms. Grosvenor certainly did a wonderful job bringing him and all the other characters to life and has given me a new appreciation of first person stories.
The most intriguing aspect of Bloom was the flower lore woven throughout the entire tale. From the chapter titles to the small flower lessons when Lily helped customers or talked about her business, there was no doubt, Ms. Grosvenor did her research. I highly recommend Bloom and look forward to reading more by this very talented author.
