Every child yearns to belong. Whether it's belonging to a friend, or understanding their place in the family, this need is real and important. Author Valerie Hardin understands this need and has written two books that lovingly looks at this issue.

Elaine's Amazing Stink is about a skunk that lost her stink. She feels awkward around the other skunks because she is different. Yet, she wants to belong and have friends, but wonders if it's possible. Ms. Hardin solves Elaine's problem in a straightforward and simple way. Yes, Elaine is able to join the other skunks and the answer is both cute and serious. Children will see that friendship is based on love and the actions that come out of that love.

Both books are beautifully illustrated and will keep the attention of young readers. The writing is clear, crisp and easy to understand. These books "belong" on the shelves of any child.

And if this review doesn't yet convince you of the value of these books, please consider that 5% of all royalties go to Hale House, America's oldest and best known independent agency for caring for babies addicted to drugs, or suffering from the virus that causes HIV or AIDS. It seems that Valerie Hardin can write about love and the actions that come out of that love because she really understands and lives it herself.

Every child yearns to belong. Whether it's belonging to a friend, or understanding their place in the family, this need is real and important. Author Valerie Hardin understands this need and has written two books that lovingly looks at this issue.

Star Babies looks at adoption through the eyes of the narrator, a young girl. In this book the issue of belonging is centered on "why" and "how". Timmy's sister tells of the fun she has with her Mom and Dad, whether it's cleaning the house or playing pretend. She describes when baby Timmy joins the family and how they are called "star babies" because "Mom wished on a zillion stars that we would come into her family." Once again, belonging comes as a result of love and the actions that come out of that love.

Both books are beautifully illustrated and will keep the attention of young readers. The writing is clear, crisp and easy to understand. These books "belong" on the shelves of any child.
