A Brief Case of Murder is not an open and shut mystery. The spotlight of suspicion hovers over several of the characters and it will take a careful analysis to find the murderer.
Famous author, Olsten Barrett, was obnoxious in life, but in death he was more of a problem. He had recently returned to Clark's Landing, his childhood home, for a book-signing event. A large crowd turned out to see the local boy who had made it big, but one person had a deadly plan for him. When his body was found at the base of a cliff, the autopsy clearly showed it was foul play. Although his personality left much to be desired, who hated him enough to actually commit murder?
The author set this crime story in a quiet fishing village. Many of the characters grew up in this town and shared childhood memories. This lent a very companionable feel to the story. Therefore, when a murder occurred in their midst, readers will feel the tension mount instantly. There was also a creative use of weather conditions, as the fog, waves and wind of this coastal area highlighted certain actions of the characters.
The list of suspects and the possible motives will have readers guessing right up to the end. Clues are carefully dropped, yet it will take a thoughtful examination of the facts to come up with the right answer. Amateur sleuth and main character, Aggie, kept notes on all these details, and readers would do well to peek over her shoulder to see which way her thoughts are leading.
A Brief Case of Murder is a clever story with enough curves and clues to keep mystery fans happy.
