Walking the World in Wonder is simply magnificent.

As a parent of young children, I've looked at more books on introducing herbs to children than I can even remember. Most were too dull to hold my attention, let alone my children's, and the others while interesting presented the information above a child's understanding. I didn't want to foster my children's kinship with nature with big, bulky herbal guides I used. Walking the World in Wonder landed on my desk just when I began to lose hope. As I glanced through the pages, I felt hope stirring. This was the book I had been looking for!

Ellen presents the information in a clear, easy to understand manner with the herbs, trees and bushes introducing themselves, giving clues on how to recognize them and even how their bark, leaves, fruits or roots can be used. The photographs of each plant were gorgeous and went a long way in helping my boys identify the different species. Our daily nature walks became reenergized as my boys were eagerly searching for the herb we'd read about that day. Of course, the little crafts and recipes for each herb might have been the reason they were so excited. *g*

As a parent and homeschool teacher, I was thrilled to see the herbs divided into seasons, making it easier to find some of the plants listed and incorporate more learning opportunities. I also appreciated the time Ellen made to discuss proper harvesting techniques and which plants shouldn't be harvested due to endangerment. Walking the World in Wonder deserves a place in every household shelf. Or in my case, on the kitchen table or in the gathering basket. *g* A definite keeper.
