Ellen Harris has never been more proud of her younger sister, Gail Morgan. Gail has pulled herself up from their humble beginnings in the small town of Evansdale, Maine, to make a name for herself as a singer in New York City. The two sisters are due to spend the upcoming Christmas holidays together, and are both looking forward to catching up. But on the day of her scheduled arrival, Gail is not on her plane. A phone call announces the news that she has been brutally murdered.
Ellen is beside herself with grief. She has long thought of herself as Gail's protector, ever since their parents died and Gail spent time in the horrible Evansdale Home for Girls until Ellen was old enough to take custody. Ellen travels to New York and offers up a challenge to her sister's murderer, "Why don't you come after me?...I'll be waiting for you." When another murder occurs in Evansdale, the police start to wonder--is the killer in New York, or is there a link to the small town? Will Ellen's demand draw out the culprit, or does it paint a target on her back?
Nowhere to Hide is one scary book! I read part of it at home alone, and every small noise made me almost jump out of my skin. The reader is given a look into the minds and motivations of many of the characters, including the murderer. Although his identity isn't revealed until almost the end, Nowhere to Hide isn't the type of book that readers will turn the pages to discover the killer's name. But rather, it's the thrilling adventure of the ride, wondering if the characters will be safe and able to escape the murderer's wrath. The stalking and the chase is what will keep readers holding their breath until the very end.
Ellen is a very sympathetic character. She has been through a lot in her lifetime--the loss of her parents, the loss of her husband, and now the death of her sister. I found it totally believable that she would put her own safety on the line to find her sister's killer. There are some intriguing secondary characters that round out the plot as well.
Nowhere to Hide is an action packed thriller. It won the Eppie Award for outstanding achievement in electronic publishing. Mystery lovers should be thrilled by this offering from Joan Hall Hovey and shouldn't hesitate to pick it up...and read it with the lights on!

Still reeling from the recent discovery of her husband's infidelity, forty-five year old Rachael Warren decides to return to Jenny's Cove, the place where she visited her grandmother when she was a child. Rachael purchases the house she used to stay in with the intention of starting her life over with happy memories mingling with new ones.
Jenny's Cove is not as peaceful and serene as it appears on the surface. A local girl is attacked at a convenience store and later killed. People disappear, dead bodies are found. Rachael begins to recover from the dissolution of her marriage and starts to feel "whole" again. But someone is stalking her, and it will take the ingenuity of Rachael and many of her new friends to get to the bottom of the mystery. Who is causing the reign of terror? What is the person's connection to Rachael?
Chill Waters is a well-written mystery that will leave readers breathless. The plot moves at a quick pace, and clues to the murderer's identity are given at exactly the right times to keep the storyline fresh and exciting. Rachael's character is someone we can all identify with--she's gone through some tough times and is trying to make the best out of her life. The beach setting of Jenny's Cove adds both a cozy atmosphere and an opportunity for some very terrifying scenes dealing with the water.
Although it's fairly easy for the reader to discover the identity of the culprit, watching Rachael and the other people of the town come to the same conclusion is intriguing. Mystery and thriller lovers should put Chill Waters at the top of their list to purchase. Chill Waters is the first book I have read by Joan Hall Hovey, but it will definitely not be my last.
