The face of today's conservative is changing. Their eyes are open wider to see new areas that call for compassion. Their hands are reaching outward to embrace those people who may have been defined as "untouchable" and "unreachable". Their minds are wrapping around startling advancements in medicine and science. And their hearts are filled with the timeless love of Christ.
Why then, are they being criticized? Dr. Joel Hunter takes a penetrating and powerful look at today's Christians and the real issues that surround them. While acknowledging the emotions that are present whenever religion and politics are present, he presses forward to the heart of the matter - namely, the heart of Jesus and His specific commands. These pages can be considered a field manual for the next generation of conservatives -- these are people who love the Lord and are willing to enlarge their sphere of influence even if it overlaps with those of differing beliefs.
It should be noted that at no time does Dr. Hunter advocate weakening distinctive Christian and conservative positions for the sake of compromise. Rather, these pages are more like "a call to arms" ("arms" more for hugging than hurting), where the volley of angry rhetoric and raised fists is replaced by a genuine realization that the world is changing. Although the message of Christianity is timeless, the methods of delivering that message need to be appropriately modified to have a positive impact on the world. Otherwise, these truths, which are sprinkled with the grace and mercy of God, will seem ineffective and even harsh to those around us.
Cooperation, not criticism lies at the heart of this book. Although the author makes a strong case for his position, he is not dogmatic or overbearing. These pages reflect a humble desire to enlarge the scope of conservatism. A very helpful voter's guide is also included to help readers evaluate the issues and the candidates.
