Web of Dreams weaves together some unusual elements to lure readers in a snare of suspense.

Terror begins in the opening pages, when an abusive father pushes his ten-year-old son over the threshold of a normal childhood, and into a life devoted to domination. As Max Boniface grows up and becomes a brilliant scientist, his mind stays warped by his painful past. He seeks to use his knowledge and wealth to create a mind-altering drug, allegedly to help schizophrenics. However, the power he craves is not in developing a drug for humanitarian reasons. Max sees the enormous and unethical potential in this compound, and lusts after a life of pure power.

Not willing to have this drug endure the tedious and time-consuming testing of the FDA, Max performs his own experiments on humans. His wife, Dana, becomes one of his unsuspecting guinea pigs, but when she experiences some startling side effects, Max struggles to gain control. The result is a terror-filled race between science and sanity.

Author Lawrence King combined cutting edge stem cell research with ancient Indian traditions to highlight the past, present and future aspects of mind control. This unique blend was also able to interject a note of spirituality into the medical world. There are enough details to allow the readers to understand the principle of Max's new drug and how it was created. Also evident, is the potential good it could have done, if Max's greed and ambition had not surfaced.

Readers will also get an interesting look at ancient Indian traditions through the character of Mary Birdsong. However, the main theme throughout the story seems to be the amazing power of the human mind. Glimpsing this power through the eyes of Max, the scientist, and Mary Birdsong, the spiritualist, will leave readers marveling at its potential. As the author links the past to the present, the future seems to hold enormous possibilities.

The characters of Max, Dana, and Mary Birdsong were all filled with strength for their own particular purposes. Max was the consummate villain, but Dana and Mary showed the power needed to overcome that evil. There was a sustained suspense throughout the book, and enough details to allow readers to enter into this unique story of mind control.

Web of Dreams challenges readers' thinking with a stimulating blend of science and spirituality.
