A follower of the Dark God, Kaska of Artane was a skilled warrior. On his way to give information to his lord Prince Britar, he hears a woman cursing the brigands attacking her. He rides to her rescue and sees a beautiful Battlemaid holding her own against the brigands. Yet even her abilities weren't enough to defeat them all. He lends a hand, determined to claim her for his own, a sacrifice to his god, after the brigands are routed.

Kaska knows she will not submit willingly and is looking forward to challenging her. It is only when she faints does his honor prevent him from challenging her immediately. As he stitches her wound, she introduces herself as Matia, follower of the Maid of Light, and speaks of her decision to join Prince Britar's forces. What is he to do? The Prince will need all the warriors willing to serve him to win the upcoming war. His honor and oath to Prince Britar will not allow him to challenge and claim her until after the war is over.

While her vow of service to the Maid of Light demanded celibacy, Matia nonetheless enjoyed the feelings Kaska's appearance raised in her. Her vow would never allow her to act on her feelings, but she could still fantasize.

As the two fight side by side in the war, they become close friends and shieldmates. Even share the same tent. Both know over the course of time they've fallen in love. Yet will their love survive when the war ends and Kaska challenges her, determined to claim her in the name of his god?

Wow. Ms. Michaels has written a rich detailed world, filled with strong warriors, enigmatic gods and strong desires. I was caught up in the story, drawn by the obvious love Kaska and Matia had for each other. I couldn't stop reading; I had to know if they would still be together. If Kaska would succeed in claiming Matia. Beautifully written, The Dark One isn't for the faint of heart as the religion and rituals of the Dark God are just that, dark. Yet even then, there is still a great deal of sensuality and eroticism. Those brave enough to read this erotic tale will be surprised and delighted by Ms. Michaels' ability. An intriguing read from start to finish.
