Glyneth knew she was different from everyone else. She could hear the earth, knew how to use healing energy and had chameleon-like skin, changing colors to fit her mood. Even more blasphemous was the fact she knew how to read and write and questioned the ancient beliefs and ways. None of this mattered today, however. Today was the day the Outsiders would come, taking females back with them. Every ten years, they came, kidnapping fertile village females.

Why couldn't her people stand up the Outsiders? Why did they just allow these men to take away sisters, daughters and mothers? Glyneth hated the way everyone just accepted the raids as a part of life. She was determined not to be taken and deliberately made herself unattractive. Her trick worked, up until the point one of the soldiers returned with the woman he had taken, a woman who had two young children.

Lucas didn't know why he brought the woman back. She was a known breeder, something his people desperately needed. So why had he brought her back? He couldn't explain his decision or why he chose some disfigured ugly female in her place.

As Lucas and Glyneth made their way back to Lucas' home, they spent their travel time conversing. Lucas was stunned to learn she knew about the Golden Era when Earth had been a bustling, fertile land. Even more shocking were her insights into the wonderful life she and the other females would have. A concubine is still a concubine no matter what she is called or how she is dressed. In truth, Lucas had never even stopped to consider such a notion or even question the way things were done nowadays.

Even as she falls for the handsome Outsider, Glyneth still wants nothing more than to find the man who raped who her mother, extract her revenge and return to her village. The Earth itself has a different plan for her. Something is making the women of the planet infertile and is slowly killing off the older male population. With her gifts, Glyneth is the only one who can possibly save her world. But will she discover a cure in time?

Alien Heat is a remarkable example of science fiction romance. Ms. Knight has set her novel in Earth's future, used much of its history and technology, but given it a special twist and then stayed within the rules of her world. Glyneth and Lucas are wonderfully dimensional characters, each bound to their own path, each aware of who and where they stand in the world. I especially loved the reason the women were infertile. It was so unexpected and different. Don't miss.
