Brad Mueller, Fr. Lauderdale Police Lieutenant, has a new assignment. He is to try to break up a car theft ring. This is an undercover assignment. No biggie, he's done them before, plenty of times. But this is deep undercover. Brad is to go undercover as a gay hairdresser. His boss, Captain Crowe, has found the perfect setup for Brad. It is renting a room in the house next to the supposed chop shop. However, the landlord will only rent to a single woman. Captain Crowe is sure that if he can get Brad to go in as a gay guy, a really gay guy, the landlord might just rent to him.
Brad gets some annoying but effective lessons on how to dress, wear makeup and behave. By the way, Brad is as macho as they come. He is the ultimate ladies man. Will he do this? Well, he has no choice. Take this assignment or get fired.
Kirsten Engel responds to her doorbell. Could it already be someone for the room to rent? Kirsty nearly takes a step back when she opens her door to see a tall, muscular man with earrings, makeup and high heels. It's not that he's so obviously gay that shocks Kirsty, it is the fact that he is just too gorgeous for words, and she senses a zing of attraction. Kirsty doesn't want to rent to a man, any man. She doesn't want to fend off any unwarranted attention. Not that she'll get it in any case, especially since she's been constantly reminded by her ex-fiancé that she is fat and unlovable.
Brad rents the room from Kirsty. After all, money talks. Let the fun begin...
American Beauty is incredibly humorous. Whether it is Brad "remembering" to act gay, or going a bit overboard, or nearly responding to his very physical reaction to Kirsty - this was very enjoyable. Kirsty felt bad with Brad's sob story, that he just broke up with his boyfriend - so she sets him up with her boss Marshall. Who will "win" Brad in the end, Kirsty or Marshall?
Brad just wants to speed up his investigation so he can get to Kirsty. Is it that easy? Can he trap the bad guy? How will he let Kirsty know that their mutual attraction has merit?
I truly enjoyed American Beauty, as it is a wonderful story filled with passion, love, intrigue, and of course, humor. It is also wonderful to see a sexy hunk of a guy attracted to a full-figured woman. Be sure to pick up this book by Ashley Ladd, first time Ellora's Cave author.
