To Gemma Ravenscroft, going back to England after years of being in Canada seemed to be the right thing. Her Grandmother had left her Temple Cottage after her death; a beautiful piece of land, near the sea. It was the only place that Gemma ever felt she "belonged" at any time in her life.
But after she gets back, things are not as perfect as she would like. First, her car ends up getting stuck in the mud before she reaches the cottage. Luckily for her she meets the handsome Dr. Alex MacRae - who is now the practicing physician in the nearby village. He makes it quite plain from the beginning that he would like to get to know Gemma better.
Then she decides to take a row in her skiff and finds herself out in the middle of a storm and being rescued by a Coast Guard captain named Max Jennings. Max is a rugged Viking-like man who is very intimidating in his nature. After a short amount of time it is evident that Max also wants to be a part of Gemma's life.
What Gemma finds out is that she is in the middle of a sting operation by MI5. She is doing her best to stay out of their way, but it just does not seem to work. On top of that, there is the presence of a ghostly Templar Knight, who wants Gemma to help him with something.
This was an interesting story that kept my attention with all the layers of mystery involved. The only thing that bothered me was the way that Gemma let both Alec and Max control certain scenes in her life. I found myself at times just wanting to whack Gemma in the back of the head and tell her to "stand up for herself."
Having said that, I would not discourage anyone from reading this book. As I said before, there are layers of mystery that have to be peeled through to get to the truth. I constantly felt that I had something figured out, and then there was a twist that sent me in another direction.
I liked the blending of the real world with the paranormal world of the Templar Knight ghost. I think the best mysteries in this story are those that involve him.
This would be a good book to have along for those long bus or train rides to work, or for a rainy weekend day when you just don't feel like doing chores.
