Ghostly occurrences were normal for Jordan Raven. At the tender age of four, she was visited by her grandfather's ghost and wasn't a bit afraid. Since then she'd been visited by both her grandfather and her grandmother and taken comfort in their presence.
Growing up without a father had only served to increase the bond between Jordan and her mother. They were very close, often talking about their dreams, hopes and fear. The day Jordan left for college was an emotional one, but she was ready for the start of a new adventure. Her first day there she noticed a handsome young man. A bit shy, she never spoke to him, but was always aware of his presence. To her complete surprise, he asks her out and thus begins the greatest adventure of her life.
Jordan was head over heels for Martin Corbette and he for her. In a few short weeks, they knew their futures were entwined and life was good. Almost too good. They'd often talked about getting married and a shortly after Jordan began having disturbing dreams about Martin dying. It was only a dream right? Dreams like that didn't really come true, did they? Unfortunately, it did.
The same night he was going to propose Martin was killed in a hit-and-run. Jordan's world fell apart; she'd lost the love of her life. Unable to cope after his death, she quit her job and stayed close to her house, venturing out only to play with the dog Martin had given her. Jordan is unable to let Martin go, mainly because she still senses his presence, not to mention all the notes he leaves on the windowsill even after his death.
Then she receives a phone call from her stepfather: her mother is gravely ill and the doctors fear the worst. She rushes home and once again has strange dreams. Her mother is going to die and she will be left alone once again. And still Martin remains with her, leaving messages saying, "He is coming". She doesn't understand what he means, but is nonetheless grateful for his presence, even if it is a ghostly one.
Will Jordan ever be to experience love, joy and laughter again? And just who is the person Martin says is coming?
An emotional paranormal, Notes on the Windowsill is a fascinating read. Written in the first person, we are given an intimate look into Jordan's life. We experience her immense joy at being love, her despair at losing the two most important people in her life, and her confusion to find her place afterwards. Ms. Leese doesn't gloss over Jordan's guilt; instead it plays a vital role in the novel, but never to the point where the reader is overwhelmed. There were a few things I would have liked to see explained a bit more in-depth, but otherwise I found Notes on the Windowsill to be a truly wonderful read.
