August Is Murder by Bob Liter is an action-packed mystery told in the first person. It was great to read a story written in this point of view.

Nick Bancroft has inherited a one-man detective agency, and is continuing journalism, his fist career. Since he doesn't even carry a gun, simple enough, right? Well, no.

Katherine Cameron hires Nick because of a threat to her life and gives him a one thousand dollar retainer. Then the same night he was hired, he was burned out of his home and office. Nick and his stray cat are suddenly homeless. Nick's friend, Otto, a bar owner takes him in for the night. Then, Nick's ex-girlfriend, Maggie, finds out that he was displaced and offers him to come stay with her.

Nick doesn't hear from Katherine and goes looking for her. She appears to have disappeared and her dog is killed. The police don't have much on her, and her husband does not seem too concerned about her disappearance. But, Nick was retained by her and decides to continue to look for leads on the harassment, and wants to find out for himself if Kathlerine was playing him.

He works with his leads at newspaper offices and his local police station. He nets far more than they do, and he does find her. But, not before her supposed husband is killed in the same brutal manner as her dog. Apparently, by The Club, possibly run by corrupt town officials.

Nick volleys back and forward between Katherine, his client-turned lover, and Maggie, his girlfriend. He continues to work Katherine's case, because she is arrested for her supposed husband's murder. All the while, cheering his favorite team, the Chicago Cubs, toward the playoffs.

Through bizarre twists and turns, all orchestrated by the corrupt officials, Nick is determined to get to the bottom of what is really going on with Katherine. She is holding something back from him. Of that, he is certain.

While we are riveted to Mr. Liter's novel, trying to figure out who did what, to whom and when, we are treated to this first person narrative. This impacts the story told and keeps us very interested as we, along with Nick, are very anxious to figure out who's who, and what The Club is, and who in "The Club" committed the murders that are now connected to Katherine.

If you love a good mystery, and want to see a terrific suspense story being told in this narrative, then you will love August Is Murder by Bob Liter.
