Toby wasn't happy about his parents' divorce. Who would be? But their new home on 7th Street was worlds away from their previous abode and nothing like the place his mother had described. The place was depressing; everyone on the street was grumpy and ill-tempered. Even the sun wasn't as bright. And then there was the wall...
Covered with horrible, hateful images, it loomed over the street. Though he doesn't understand why, Toby is drawn to the wall. While studying it a group of teenagers calling themselves the Strafers attack him. Although the gang later becomes a large problem for Toby, they are the reason he is befriend by Moe. Homeless, but kind and wise, Moe takes Toby under his wing and together they decide to do something about the wall and 7th Street.
What starts out as a two-person project soon envelopes the entire community and the hateful images are painted over. But will the community's goodwill and newfound kindness survive the final attack of the Strafers?
As I read The Wall on 7th Street, I found myself swept away. Toby, Moe and the emotional atmosphere surrounding the Street was intensely real. There is a sense of urgency as the book progresses, but also the sense everything will work out in the end. Most intriguing and interesting to me were the Iroquois legends and the way Martinau wove them throughout the story.
The Wall on 7th Street is a shining example of what can happen when a community works together!
