The Barrier Stone is a solid mix of fantasy, adventure, honor and love.
Kassia ya Sia has a mysterious past and an uncertain future. After being exiled from the land of Tesrant, she enters a new life. Now, she has to be prepared to die.
The author described the people, lands, and culture with enough details to interest the reader. The history surrounding Kassia's birth and the fight against the Dark One provides the motivation for the characters' actions. Readers will have all the necessary information to enter into this story.
The fantasy elements are appropriately placed and make an exciting addition. The distortion of time and the personal power of the Guardian Swords are crucial to the story. Young adult readers will be able to connect with Kassia's frustration at being different, as well as her desire to be free. This character is drawn with a touch of honor, intelligence and an adventurous streak. Her mysterious past is slowly unveiled, giving her a sense of destiny. Readers will sympathize with this character and realize that her birthright is the pathway to her future. As the story progresses, decisions and denials take an emotional toll, but she finds a loyal friend to share her heart and love.
The story climaxes at the Barrier Stone, where good and evil meet in their respective powers. Fear, fighting, and a suitable finale wrap up the story, yet leaves readers hoping for future tales.
For Kassia, The Barrier Stone is not just an obstacle to overcome, it's a door to a whole new life.
