Her entire life, Dr. Pilar Brookstone had known her father cared nothing for her. She was merely an object to be tolerated or disciplined when she brought unwanted attention to his family name. Even graduating in the top of her class could earn her his praise.

After serving her residency, Pilar decided to enter into correctional medicine. She wanted to help prisoners, make their lives better. She never expected to fall in love with an inmate. As her relationship with the inmate progresses, her well-ordered life and mind fall apart. It's not long before she's planning an escape, crossing lines and breaking rules.

Not my normal choice of reading material, Life Sentence was nonetheless enjoyable. With its true-to-life plotline and compelling characters, this book holds your interest and raises questions about why people act as they do. The most heartbreaking part of this book is the reader knows Pilar will not have a happy ending, yet they find themselves unable to stop reading, hoping against hope she'll come to her senses and realize the mistakes she's made.

While the ending is complete and gives a good ending, there were a few questions that I had that weren't answered. I realize answering them would probably take another book, but as a reader I felt disastified when the book ended and these questions/suspicions weren't answered. This minor disappointment aside, Life Sentence is an intriguing look at the mysteries of human nature.
