This novel certainly lives up to it title. An emotionally charged plot, combined with a sweet romance, brings readers an exciting story tied together with a thread of tenderness.
This third book in the Texas Legacy series focuses on Bonnie Kahler. After the unexpected death of her husband, she struggles to put her life in order while her unruly son and an overly solicitous neighbor adds to her grief. When the new preacher ambles into town, seeking to hide his past behind a beard and some miles, he soon finds himself in the spotlight as Bonnie's life becomes tangled up with his own. Events in this small community soon cast a dark shadow on this couple, unearthing secrets while revealing sinister plans.
Wonderfully written, with vibrant characters, this book offers readers a taste of the Old West with a caress of romance. Fans of this series will recognize familiar friends, while newcomers will easily follow the story line. The emotional appeal is immediately felt, as Bonnie's grief is compounded by the disobedience of her son, Zack. Her fears and frustration propel the novel forward, evoking sympathy from readers, while hinting at a hopeful resolution.
The setting has the daring and the dangers of this time period, which are highlighted by the evil intentions of a bad guy determined to get his way. An air of mystery surrounding the new preacher adds an engaging level of intrigue, and also allows him to develop and mature according to his religious beliefs. And that's where this novel shines. The basic teachings of Christianity enter the story smoothly and naturally, providing the characters with motivation, strength and hope. When that last page is turned, readers will feel as if they made new friends, as they shared in the wonders and mercies of God.
