Lupus is an autoimmune disease that not many people understand. Even the medical profession often has a hard time diagnosing Lupus and people can be misdiagnosed for years on end. In fact, that's the norm. This book is about one woman's journey with Lupus and what works for her. It's not a medical treatise, but they're alternative ways that can help other sufferers of Lupus erythematosus. She also gives plenty of references for checking up on the various studies, etc.
This book had me crying and marking down various points to use in the future. Why? I have lupus. My grandfather had it as well. Sometimes there are days when I don't want to do anything but sleep, even when I'm having a bout of insomnia, I'm so tired, that I don't want to do anything. Reading Sharon's story, her own problems and her slow recovery helped me to see how it's something many Lupus sufferers share. There were some parts where I felt it was a bit preachy on the alternative regimen only, but overall, I really enjoyed this book. Why? Because used in conjunction with medical treatments, I think that some of these alternatives could benefit other sufferers. In fact, I've made contact with my own specialist in order to see what of these treatments can be included in my own plan to help me stay stronger and reduce the need for medications.
Sharon Moore's book Lupus: Alternative Therapies That Work is a great book that has wonderful references for studies, more information along with conventional medical treatments. She doesn't advocate forgetting medical treatment, but enhancing it with other alternative therapies that can work together to keep you healthier longer. If you have a friend, neighbor, or a family member with Lupus, I highly recommend getting this book for them and taking the time to go through it together and seeing how you can help them to implement these strategies to see what works best for them. If you have Lupus, run and get this book. Take it to your doctor and see what s/he is willing to do to work with you. This book is definitely on my reference shelf for constant referral, especially for the bad days.
