She lost her husband on their wedding night and then lost her memory after being hurt trying to stop her brother-in-law from avenging his murder. When she finally regains her memory months later, everything she has come to love is threatened by what she remembers. Is there any hope for Regan and Iain?
Scotswoman Regan MacLaren was only married for one day when her husband, Roddy, was brought back to Strathyre House dead from a gunshot wound to the back. Having been too drunk and rough for Regan's taste on their wedding night, Roddy headed off with some of his cohorts to rieve (steal) some cattle from the richer Clan Campbell and had been killed for his thievery. His brother Walter sets off to avenge Roddy's murder with Regan's blessing, but then she changes her mind and decides to ride after them to get them to turn back.
Regan is knocked unconscious when her horse rears during a thunderstorm and she is dragged along with her foot stuck in the stirrup. She is found by a crofter (farmer) and taken to Balloch Castle, home of Iain Campbell, tanist of the powerful Campbell Clan. When Regan finally comes to, it is discovered she has amnesia and has no idea who she is or where she came from.
Brawny and bonny, laird Iain Campbell is a kind, religious warrior who has been waiting for God to send a special woman to him. He is quite smitten with the pretty amnesiac but must keep reminding himself to refrain from falling too hard in case she is already taken by another. When Regan finally regains her memory, what she remembers could very well separate them forever, and maybe even cost Iain his life.
Kathleen Morgan brings readers a second helping of late 1500s Scotland in book two of the THESE HIGHLAND HILLS series. While amnesia has been used as a basis for many books and stories in the past, it's only a handful of authors who can carry it off well and Ms. Morgan is one of them. Several characters from the first novel, CHILD OF THE MIST, make appearances in WINGS OF MORNING, adding interest to the story for those who have read the first one also. Clan feuds, murder, deceit, romance, and faith combine to make a historical Scottish tale that has earned a place on my keeper shelf alongside its prior companion.
