The Civil War is over, but the emotional turmoil rages on. Kim Murphy concludes her trilogy with the best possible ending to a time of history that caused so much heartache.
Amanda and Alice are sisters, bound by family ties, yet divided by their respective loyalties. One has married a Union major, while the other is wed to a former Confederate officer. Their lives and loves reflect a constant tension as they struggle with the aftermath of the war and their individual places in the new country. Danger, illness and treachery enter their homes and leave scars that no peace treaty can erase.
Readers are in for an emotional conclusion to this series. The author has carefully painted a backdrop of this time period and includes several interesting insights. However, the majority of the book looks at the lives of these sisters as they seek to honor their marriage vows in truth, love and peace.
The author has provided a significant contrast with these two women. Readers will get a better understanding of the issues that remained in the South after the war. Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness were portrayed in the characters, and were made real with concise writing and heartfelt dialogue. Action-filled scenes are nicely balanced with quiet moments of family togetherness.
Yet, despite the turmoil of the times, love triumphs in a variety of ways, as the hearts of the main characters strive for a perfect expression of long held feelings. The book takes many surprising turns, but comes to rest in the best possible place.
Glory and Promise is an historical and emotional look at the yesterdays that paved the way for the tomorrows.
