Isabelle and her sisters, Morag and Alisa, are on their way home from a business trip. Due to their father's illness, he was unable to make the trip and sent his daughters in his stead. A storm had the land blanketed in snow and it was growing worse. Hoping to shed a few miles from their trip, they cut across Glen Dubh land. To their dismay, their trespassing is noted and they are ordered to spend the night in the castle of Glen Dubh.
Haldon, the lord of Glen Dubh, had once been a handsome young man, but no longer. The fairy Lucia, tired of his arrogance and unfeeling nature towards others, cast a spell and turned him into a hideous beast. The curse could be broken but only if Haldon could earn the love of a woman. It had been many years since his transformation and if anything Haldon had grown worse. He had no intention of changing. Using his magic mirror he had seen the coach crossing his land and the beauties within.
Of the three, it was Isabelle who drew his eye and he was determined to possess her. Yet he knew he couldn't force her to stay, not if he wished her to welcome his touch or his passion. He promises to heal her father but only if Isabelle will stay with him until death parts them. When she agrees, Haldon is elated; now he only has to earn her trust and awaken her passion and his lust will be eased. The fairy Lucia warns him easing his lust will not end the spell; he must change his ways.
Will this stubborn man change before it is too late?
The tale of Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite of all the fairy-tales and Ms. Neal's retelling only endears it to my heart all the more. While Isabelle is a most engaging heroine, it was and always is the hero who stirs my heart. Haldon is so full of himself and his own wants and needs that even when presented with the means to end his curse, it takes him forever. I know this tale will be going on my keeper shelf and I strongly urge you not to miss it.
