Earth was destroyed and they were prisoners. At least, that is what Riven gathered from listening to the other men and women placed in the large room. Aliens had attacked and then more aliens came and scooped up a few thousand people and then... BOOM! The first aliens destroyed his home. What was to become of them?

Fed, exercised and trained in a sleep cycle. Whatever was coming, Riven was going to be prepared, determined not to willingly do anything. Then the announcement came. They were slaves, and would be marked and separated. A slave? No way was he going to be a slave. Not a chance in hell. In fact, Riven told the alien who came in that very thing. After a moment's examination, the alien pulled out a completely different marker than the ones being used. Riven felt himself falling asleep and...darkness.

He awoke to the sound of two aliens conversing. One was very pleased with Riven. So pleased, he was going to make him is personal sex slave. Riven panicked. There was no way he would ever sexually submit. Ever. When he was finally awake and saw the shape, the face the alien had taken, it was like his nightmares were coming true. As the alien Phoenix sets about training him as a slave and using Riven's past to bring him around, Riven learns the past does return to haunt you.

But will the lessons gleaned from the dreams, destroy any chance Riven might have to be happy in his new life?

A large fan of Willa's, I've read every single one of her books, but find my favorites to be her male/male pairings. Chain of Thorns is the best by far of all of her work. It resounds with so much emotion, care, tenderness and heartache as well. As you read, nay, experience Riven's life and what Eduardo did him, you weep. Your heart hopes against hope, that he will be okay, will find happiness with Phoenix, because you instinctively know Phoenix is nothing like Eduardo. That he is good, wonderful and loving with all of his servants, and will be even more so with Riven.

Chain of Thorns is one of those rare novels you pick because you know the author, know how erotic she writes, but it is the emotions touched upon and felt that have you reading it over and over and over again. Each time, experiencing the emotions to an even deeper degree. This is a true gem and should not be missed for any reason.

Reviewer Note: While I found Chain of Thorns to be absolutely breathtaking, some readers may not like the fact there are a few scenes of non-consensual sex. These are not fully described and concentrate more on Riven's emotions than the act itself.

Ros was a peddler who liked to give and receive pleasure from men. But the townsfolk in the villages he visited did not care for this at all. In one such village, he was caught with another man and they drove him into the woods where they knew the beast lived. Men had disappeared into those woods never to be seen or heard of again.

It was wintertime and Ros thought he would freeze to death. He came upon a cottage with magical flowers growing outside of it. Ros grabbed quite a few of these roses and hid them on himself; knowing he could use them as substance if he needed to and use them to help ward off magic as well.

Ros woke up in a warm, comfortable, unknown bed. He knew someone brought him there and saved his life. Floating hands took care of his needs. Ros knew magic was around and he dutifully, secretly, ate the roses. Then he saw the beast. The beast wanted him, his blood and his soul. Will Ros be able to save the beast that was cursed to this twisted life of the vampire? Will love heal all? Or will it kill him?

Blood Red is a very in-depth story of a man willing to sacrifice himself in order to save the one he comes to love. This story is both thought provoking and endearing. Ms. Okati did an amazing job creating this unique romance story with a bit of a twist to it. Blood Red by talented author Willa Okati is a wonderful read and one that I gladly recommend.
