What happens if after a long day at work, grocery shopping, you're thrown against a wall and cold hands wrap around your neck and you feel a pinprick on your neck? You're being attacked by a vampire. This wasn't necessarily the case for Ross Sherman, a proofreader in Milwaukee. He goes to the annual Christmas party and though he is with his coworker Jane, he drops her the moment he sees-- her. She is Simone and she walks in the light of the Moon. Yet she's not a gentle vision, but one that can be a venging angel in her quest for blood and what she wants. She wants Ross and will do anything, including kill Jane in order to keep him.
The road to immortality isn't taken lightly, but Ross can't resist her, not even after all he's witnessed. For him there is only Simone. Adjusting to being a vampire isn't made easily, in fact, Ross has more questions than answers and only she can give them to him. When she does, he seems to accept it all without reservation, but with a calm acceptance. In fact, her own history gives him a lot to think upon. She had a rough life prior to becoming a vampire by Leopold.
Though some of the backstory is a bit long and some of Ross' moments of doubt seem a bit melodramatic, Lance Panzer has brought a new look to the world of the vampire. The world is interesting, it has depth and the way he brings history into the story is refreshing. I enjoyed learning more about Simone and her lust for knowledge and the people she met through the years. Yet things aren't always simple in the world Mr. Panzer has created and sometimes the mortal shell isn't so easily thrown away. More importantly, even among vampires, nothing is how it seems. Not completely. This is a wonderful vampire world to be added to the diverse culture of vampires. Though not a traditional love story, there are many romantic elements that help bring the story to an interesting conclusion, one that you might not quite expect.
