Being an actress is tough, more so when you're struggling to make ends meet. For understudy, Esther Diamond, her only hope is that the star of Sorceror!, Golly Gee takes a walk. When the stage magician causes Golly Gee to disappear, everyone freaks, including Esther. When she's warned by a mysterious note not to take the stage because Evil Comes, she goes to the police for help, only to be told there's nothing they can do.

But Esther doesn't believe them and goes looking on her own for reasons for Golly's disappearance. What she finds is magic in the form of Dr. Maxillian Zadok. When he tells her of the Evil befalling others who have disappeared, it's now a race against time - the show must go on - with or with her and against whoever is behind the dastardly deed. The thing is, can she bypass the Detective in this case when he's good-looking and always showing up when she doesn't want him to?

Laura has a fresh and exciting voice in this story, written in first person. Though there are times you want to slap Esther for missing the obvious, you're cheering her along for her actions and the way she thinks things through. The world of magic Ms. Resnick creates is believable, and yet something more than what we'd expect. I hope we'll see Esther, as Resnick hints at the end of the book. I can't wait to see what Max and Esther will encounter next and if Connor Lopez, the detective in charge, will make another hot appearance.
