The Heir is Paul Robertson's debut novel. It reads like a John Grisham novel, back when that meant something. Robertson makes storytelling look easy. Tight chapters, concise sentences and a host of intriguing characters make The Heir one of my favorite novels I've read this year, maybe in the last few years.
Jason Boyer and his brother each earn $30,000.00 a month. It isn't much, but they don't mind roughing it a little. To simplify matters even more, the brothers don't work for the cash. Their father, Melvin is a billionaire, a political and corporate tycoon. Or-he was.
On his way home from a visit with his lawyer-a meeting set up to change his will-Melvin's car spins out of control and he dies in the accident. At the reading of the will, both brothers expect to see their 30k per month increased to 50k. They've always been told the balance of the inheritance would be managed by Melvin's charitable foundation.
No one is more shocked than Jason to learn that the billions of dollars, the business and the political power is all left to him. Not wanting the money, the power, or to risk becoming like his father, Jason is ready to refuse it all. He'd rather be poor. His wife, though not a gold digger, but always ready to aspire to great wealth, convinces him-as does his brother, and the family attorney-to at least give it a try, to give it a chance.
Too quickly Jason accepts responsibility and day-by-day becomes more and more like his father. If that weren't tough enough, his nightmares increase as those around him begin to die suspicious deaths. When the police follow the money, the evidence leads them to their primary suspect. Jason Boyer.
Intense and compelling, The Heir is a fast, smart read. The tension and suspense constantly build off one another. Often frustrating, frequently humorous, always thought provoking, The Heir has the makings of a mystery classic. I would love to see it on the big screen! I cannot wait to see what else Robertson has in store for his readers, his fans!
