Bygones begins a trilogy that promises spiritually sensitive stories. In this novel, the faithfulness and family atmosphere of a Mennonite community offers a widow and her daughter a place of rest.
Twenty-three years ago, Marie Koeppler abandoned her religion when she married an "outsider". Now, she must return to the place of her childhood to fulfill the requirements of a will. Her daughter, Beth, was deeded a café, but first she must live in the town for three months. While Marie grapples with the emotional issues involved, a series of burglaries throws the spotlight of suspicion upon her and Beth. Proving their innocence may require more than the facts; it will take an outpouring of faith.
Sensitively written, these pages follow the spiritual journey of a woman who lost her family, her husband and her faith. Set within a Mennonite community, readers will get a glimpse of God working through the prayers of His people. The contemporary world of Marie and Beth provide a strong contrast to the more old-fashioned atmosphere of the townspeople. Yet, the story highlights a merciful God who hears the heart cries of His children, anywhere and at any time.
The basic tenets of Christianity were gently incorporated into the novel, offering motivation for the characters' actions, while pointing to a path of perfect peace. The family relationships created an appropriate amount of tension, as the various personalities struggled to find harmony. A sweet element of romance graced these pages, bringing with it a beautiful reminder that love never dies; it merely waits for the right conditions to flourish.
