At first glance, Emma Perkins’s life is perfect: two beautiful children and a loving husband. Look again and you’ll find the loving husband beats his wife for every little thing. Even though Emma knows she should leave her husband Jared, she refuses to leave her children with him. It’s only when her husband hires her children out to a neighboring farmer, does she escape to the Spirit, a riverboat owned by her uncle.

For the first time in years, Emma is free, but finding peace may take a bit longer. With the help of her newfound friends: her assistant cook, Lily, the mysterious engineer Gage and the enigmatic Captain Briggs, the healing of her spirit begins. Little does Emma realize how much she’ll need her friends in the near future as her abusive husband secretly follows her, determined to reclaim his wife no matter the cost.

Remarkable, haunting and utterly unforgettable. Emma captures the reader’s heart; you desperately want her to find happiness and healing. You hope she’ll find a way to love again even though she’s suffered so much main. Her inner strength is admirable, all she needed to escape her husband’s cruelty was someone to lend his or her aid and support her during the healing process.

First, There Is a River will remain with you long after you finish the last page.
