Metellus is a general in the Roman army. He has come to the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi for a prophecy of his conquest of Greece. Metellus has lived a very violent life as a soldier, and is beginning to question why he continues doing what he has been doing. He had not thought about having love in his life again until he got to Delphi.

Timarete is the Oracle of Apollo. Timarete herself has begun to question her beliefs and the validity of the gods. She is unsettled by Metellus' presence as she has recently had dreams that include him. These dreams showed her that the two of them share some common destiny.

Not wanting to again be taken to bed by the high priest, Ciron, Timarete runs away into the hills to kill herself. She is found by one of Metellus' soldiers and kept in the camp while she heals. During this time the two begin to find answers to many of their questions.

While this book does not offer anything new as far as romances go, I did like the historical action going on around the lovers. The time the author picks is before the advent of Christianity. I liked how while the Romans were trying to conquer the people of Greece, our main characters find a new faith and reason to live by being conquered by this new peaceful religion. If looking for a good romance in a historical setting, I would recommend this one.
