I remember when I first read Travis Thrasher's The Second Thief. It blew me away. I knew, immediately, that this was an author who'd have me harassing booksellers, calling and stopping trying to find out when the next Thrasher novel would be released. Since, I have read all of his works of fiction. Each has impacted my life in some way. Gritty storytelling, and wonderfully mapped out plots filled the pages of each and every one of his titles.

In Sky Blue, Colin Scott is a literary agent who loves the classics and hoped to make a difference in the world of publishing with the authors he represented. However, reality intervenes. Publishing is about money first. Big names, second. Talent comes in third, or fourth. In many ways I compare Scott to that of a police officer fresh out of the academy, idealistically believing he'll (or she'll) save the world from all forms of crime, but quickly learns that red tape and political bureaucracy tie the hands of the officer as effectively as if they were forced to work wearing a blindfold.

Aside from the growing disappointment with his career, Scott is in a struggling marriage. He and his wife, Jen, desperately want to have a child. Unfortunately, their attempts are futile. The pain of this reality overwhelms Jen's heart and allows a dark storm cloud to linger overhead.

When a much needed vacation to Cancun unleashes nothing but rain, the first nice day has the couple out on the beach hungry to take in and enjoy what's left of the trip. When a parasailing accident occurs, Scott's life is destroyed and changed forever.

Back home, back in the real world, Scott cannot manufacture the drive, discipline, and dedication needed to work effectively. His authors suffer for it. His career suffers. With his life spinning out of control and his sanity frayed, Scott is clearly in danger of losing his mind.

What will it take for Scott to gain perspective? What will it take for Scott to see the truth?

Though The Second Thief is one of my favorite novels (of all time), Sky Blue, might be a close second. There are many (personal) reasons why. As an author myself, I loved seeing the way the “agent” world works. I do not want to call Sky Blue a mystery, but it is mysterious. I do not want to call it a thriller, but it is thrilling. It is a contemporary tale with a supernatural feel. It is powerful and impacting. Thrasher has done it yet again.
