Are you a plotter or a seat-of-the-pants writer? Do you wish you had help understanding the basics of plot and perhaps some helpful lists in determining that you've covered your bases in your story? Then 20 Master Plots is the book for you. Ronald Tobias not only discusses what plot is, but he also helps you to understand what makes up each basic plot. The checklist at the end of each plot discussion is invaluable as a cheat sheet in making sure your story has all the salient points.
What I enjoyed most was not just the easy-to-read style, but that Mr. Tobias created some wonderful headings for various sections within each plot discussion. Those headers make you laugh, groan, but most importantly remember the keys to figuring out on what kind of plot your story falls. I'm a professional writer and I'm always browsing through this book, picking out new pieces of information that hadn't clicked the last time I read it. Rereading the plot chapter and the review questions help me to refocus my goals for the story and the characters while giving me the freedom to allow the characters to mold the story how they wish.
This book is for both plotters and pantsters. This book is very flexible and the knowledge gained from it will improve your story crafting. If you're looking for one craft of writing books that you simply must have, then get 20 Master Plots. You won't be sorry.
