The portal only opened every fourteen years and then only remained open for four days. Vilia had often overheard the stories and wanted desperately to see the other world. While the portal wasn't guarded, her guardian kept her under close supervision. Today she had managed to escape and was going to go through the portal.
Vilia stepped through the portal and was stunned by the beauty on Earth. Suddenly out of nowhere a small black-and-white creature came running towards her. Frightened, she fell on her back and when the creature began licking her, she wondered if it would still eat her. Help comes in the form of the dog's master, Trevor. Trevor is unlike any other boy Vilia has ever seen and she spends the next few hours with him. When Vilia's brother comes to take her back through the portal, she gives Trevor a gold barrette and promises to return in fourteen years.
It has been fourteen years and the portal is opened once again. Yet Vilia's tongue has gotten her in trouble and she is imprisoned in a tower to prevent her leaving. She begs her older brother to venture through the portal and find Trevor. Her brother tells her that even if he finds Trevor they can never be together, for neither can survive in the other's world.
Trevor has waited fourteen years to see Vilia again and nothing is going to prevent them from being together. Somehow, he'll find away to be with her.
A very short, but definitely romantic story, Up the Airy Mountain is a keeper. Ms. Toombs' characters are beautifully depicted and the love between is so very evident. From the moment, I began reading I was enchanted and know I will be rereading Up the Airy Mountain again soon.

As a shapeshifter, Zenna leads a very lonely life. She decides one night that she'd like to put an end to her virginity. The town she lives in allows her presence, but treats her differently, and she knows not one man in her town of Loveland will ever pay any attention to her. Her quest leads her to Curtis Helms, whose mysterious nature excites her. Will Curtis, who is a true mystery for a while, be the man for Zenna? Will Zenna be able to go back to her lonely life in Loveland after being with Curtis? You'll have to read this intriguing and sometimes shocking novella to find the answers.
Each story in Alien Encounters provides a woman with a man who will love them like no other. Some other-worldly experiences are here to tantalize the reader. You won't want to put this exciting anthology down. For one thing, the world-building in these stories is excellent, along with incredible steam in each well-written story. Be sure to pick up Alien Encounters for your keeper shelf.
