Apache Gold is a white-hot Western! Lovers of this genre will find plenty of gunfights, Indians, and the spirit of survival that helped to tame the Wild West.

Doc Hollister is back in this sequel to Hey Doc! He's now the sheriff of Magdalena, which is south of the border. He and his partners at the Liberty ranch find that their finances are a little low. They owe a hefty amount in taxes and the government is threatening to take away the ranch. To get the money, Doc returns to his former trade of bounty hunter. After killing a most-wanted outlaw, the outlaw's wife turns the tables on Doc and offers a bounty for his head. Will Doc be able to stay one step ahead of the bullets?

This reviewer recommends reading Hey Doc! first, in order to understand how a former medical doctor and Union soldier becomes a sheriff under an assumed name in Mexico. The author created a complex and intriguing character in Doc Hollister. Readers will be able to glimpse his former life as a healer of men, and then marvel at how skilled he becomes as a hunter of men. The contrast is startling and will capture the reader's attention.

The setting is pure Wild West, as the action travels both north and south of the border. Corrupt Mexican officials, angry Indians, and sharp-shooting outlaws fill these pages as the action proceeds at a fast pace. Doc goes from one situation to another, as his skill with a gun is challenged again and again.

There are a variety of secondary characters, from Doc's unmarried sister, Maude, from Baltimore, to a Chinese family looking for a new life. There is also enough excitement and danger to satisfy readers. When gold is mixed into this volatile situation, the action heats up to a gun-popping conclusion.

Apache Gold has all the necessary elements to make it an authentic Western.
