Kate Trillo comes home early one night to find that her sister's been murdered and the murderer is still there. When asked his name, he says Ben Fisher. She unleashes a curse from her most secret of hearts, the part of her that knows magic and witchcraft though she's been non-practicing since childhood. Later on, she discovers that it wasn't Ben who committed the violent crime, but his twin brother. Because Kate knows that what is done does come back onto the giver, she knows that she's in dire straits as well. When Victor, the real murderer goes free, Kate knows that her life is in Hecate's embrace.
Kate travels the world trying to find out why Victor killed her sister and the trail leads her to Maggie Sanger, Grail Keeper. She explains the chalice issue as well as the secret society that's trying to gather all the cups for itself. Kate doesn't want to embrace her heritage, that of power, afraid of doing only bad. But within the context, she also gets yelled at by the ghost of her sister. And she doesn't understand why Ben Fisher, the man she accidentally cursed is attracted to her. Granted, she must keep him safe as the curse works itself around them both, but once they realize that Victor is using anything and everything in his power to stop them, the race is on.
You don't need to read the other books in the Grail Keeper series to read this book, but it does enhance your reading pleasure immensely. I found Kate's journey of self discovery as well as finding more about the Hecate Cup very interesting and emotionally satisfying. I also enjoyed how the ending for both Kate and Ben was not only realistic, but romantic in its special way. The idea with the twins with differing fingerprints was fantastic and plays some interesting moments in the book that completely and utterly caught me off guard as well as other readers. I can't wait to see if Kate makes another appearance in other Grail Keeper books. I hope so as I found her a refreshing change to how many trained and untrained pagan based practitioners are portrayed. I love the realistic portrayal and hope that Ms. Vaughn gives us more of the same.
